California Newborn Screening Program Screening available for Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia. Early diagnosis can help prevent developing shock or even death, especially in boys. Newborns detected will be referred for evaluation to Rady Children's Hospital, the only CCS-approved Endocrine center in San Diego.
The Pediatric Endocrinology Service provides consultation and accepts referrals of patients with disorders of growth and/or pubertal development and for evaluation and treatment of disease affecting the pituitary, thyroid and adrenal glands, or gonads. We also evaluate and treat patients with high cholesterol and abnormal lipids, osteoporosis, rickets and other abnormalities of calcium/phosphorus metabolism, as well as disorders of carbohydrate metabolism, including diabetes mellitus and hypoglycemia. The Division will see patients referred on a routine or emergency basis.
Special services, programs, research:
The Endocrinology Division supervises an active program for growth hormone replacement and has two research protocols for growth hormone treatment. The Division is also one of five centers involved in a new program for evaluating and treating children with early pubertal development.
The diabetes center treats over 500 patients, mostly with type 1 (juvenile-onset or insulin dependent) diabetes, and includes a team consisting of a dietician, a social worker, three nurses who are certified diabetes educators, and six attending physicians. Nurses and an on-call physician offer 24 hour coverage. We also treat a growing number of obese patients that develop type 2 (adult onset or non insulin dependent) diabetes as children and adolescents. We also manage children with other forms of diabetes that are less common.
The diabetes center has an active program for insulin pumps. With a comprehensive approach that identifies children and families ready for an insulin pump, the center delivers structured education and support to achieve optimal results. In order to optimize blood sugar control, the center offers continuous glucose-sensor monitoring.
The Endocrine/Diabetes division is proud to announce that in 2005 the American Diabetes Association (ADA), has awarded the diabetes program with ADA Recognition. The award recognizes that the San Diego Children's Hospital /Whittier Diabetes Program has met the quality standards for diabetes self-management education set forth by the the largest and most widely known organization in the field of diabetes.
The division is also involved in a number of national research protocols that assess different types of insulin for type 1 diabetes, and oral medications for type 2 diabetes.
